Parrot Cove, Lake Worth Beach: Historic Homes Near Downtown and the Beach

Parrot Cove is a historic neighbourhood of early 20th-century cottages and bungalows near downtown Lake Worth Beach. Here is what published sources say about its housing, walkability and access to the beach, and the due diligence older coastal homes call for.
Parrot Cove is a historic neighbourhood in Lake Worth Beach, a few blocks from downtown and across the Intracoastal from the beach. This guide sticks to the physical, verifiable side of the neighbourhood: its housing, its layout and what is nearby. It does not describe who lives there or who it suits, because that is not a feature of the housing.
The housing
Parrot Cove’s housing stock is largely early 20th-century Florida architecture. Cottages and bungalows there often have front porches, original hardwood floors and tropical landscaping (Apartment List). The streets are lined with older homes on smaller lots, which is a very different layout from the gated, master-planned communities in western Palm Beach County (Arbor Company).
Walkability and getting around
The neighbourhood sits within blocks of downtown Lake Worth Beach (Apartment List). One listing for a property in the area cites a Walk Score of 90 and a Bike Score of 92, with dining, shops and services nearby (Apartments.com). Downtown has independently owned galleries, vintage shops, bakeries and restaurants, and the Lake Worth Playhouse, a community theatre operating since 1953 (Arbor Company). Palm Tran bus routes serve the area, and Tri-Rail connects the region to Fort Lauderdale and Miami (Arbor Company).
The beach
Lake Worth Beach itself is on the barrier island, reached by the bridge from downtown, about a mile from the neighbourhood (Apartments.com; Arbor Company). The municipal beach includes a fishing pier and a beachfront restaurant (Arbor Company).
The honest trade-offs
Older homes bring older-home issues. Sources mention limited storage in some homes and hurricane preparation as considerations (Apartment List). From my side, the checklist for a home here is:
Construction and storm hardening: roof age and attachment, windows and shutters, and whether the home has a wind-mitigation report. Older construction may not meet current code.
Systems: electrical, plumbing and sewer line condition — scope the inspection to the home’s age.
Flood zone and insurance: check the parcel on FEMA’s Flood Map Service Center and get flood and windstorm quotes before you commit (FEMA).
Historic district rules: confirm with the City of Lake Worth Beach whether the property is in a historic district and what review applies to exterior changes.
Parking: street parking can be limited; see how the specific property handles it.
Taxes and records: confirm year built, permits and the current tax bill with the Palm Beach County Property Appraiser (Palm Beach County Property Appraiser).
Schools: confirm assignment for the specific address with the School District of Palm Beach County boundary locator.
A final thought
Parrot Cove is not a gated community with resort-style amenities. What it offers is historic housing, a walkable grid and proximity to downtown and the beach. If that combination fits what you want in a home, it deserves a look, with the homework that older coastal houses always need. For more on the city, see the Lake Worth page.
